Zak van Biljon (1981) is a South African photographer known for his distinctive use of infrared photography and his refined mastery of light. Born and raised in the vast natural landscapes between Johannesburg and Cape Town, he spent his childhood surrounded by nature—so isolated that he first saw a neighbor at the age of twelve. This early environment shaped his lifelong connection to the outdoors, where he continues to hike, climb, and draw visual inspiration from the land.

Zak’s photographic journey began on his family’s first trip to Namibia, armed with a simple disposable camera. His curiosity deepened over the years, and by 2001 he was exploring black-and-white infrared photography, inspired by musicians like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Frank Zappa who popularized the technique in the 1960s. In 2003, he graduated as the top student from the National College of Photography in South Africa, studying black-and-white printing—ironically, for someone raised amid the vivid colors of the “Rainbow Nation.” In 2004, Zak left South Africa and moved to Europe. In Rome he discovered new qualities of sunlight; in London he cemented his reputation among prestigious underground labels. Later settling in Zurich, Switzerland, he continued developing his commercial photography career while devoting increasing focus to fine art. Zak works across digital and analog media, with expertise spanning contemporary advertising and modern art photography. At the core of his practice is his directorial command of light—most prominently expressed in his infrared work. Since experimenting with color infrared photography in 2009, he has embraced its surreal transformation of the world into red and pink hues, revealing an alternate, dreamlike perspective on reality.

Deeply influenced by his father, a hobby photographer, and by the many cultures he has encountered abroad, Zak van Biljon continues to explore and reimagine the visual world through a lens shaped by nature, curiosity, and masterful technique.
