Lidó Rico (Yecla, Murcia, 1968) is one of the most distinctive Spanish creators on the contemporary scene, recognized for having developed a unique language that merges the performative, the corporeal, and the conceptual. He studied Fine Arts at the Polytechnic University of San Carlos in Valencia, where he graduated in 1991, and furthered his studies at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Since the late 1980s, he has used his own body as a creative tool, casting parts of himself in various materials, a gesture that has become one of the most powerful hallmarks of his work. His international career was quickly consolidated: after winning the Murcia Joven Painting Prize in 1989, he was selected in 1992 to create the exterior sculpture for the Pavilion of Murcia at Expo ’92 in Seville. From then on, he embarked on a path of exhibitions across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. In 1997, he took part in the International Salon of Plastic Arts in Medellín (Colombia), in 2001 he received an Honorable Mention at the VI International Biennial of Drawing and Graphic Arts in Györ (Hungary), and in 2005 he represented Spain at the XXIII Alexandria Biennale (Egypt), where he was awarded the Grand Prize. His work has been exhibited at leading institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Archaeological Museum of Asturias, the University of Alicante Museum, the Regional Museum of Modern Art of Cartagena, and the Roman Theatre Museum of Cartagena, as well as galleries and cultural centers in countries including Italy, Japan, Mexico, Turkey, Germany, the United States, and Canada. In recent years, his activity has taken on renewed dimensions: in 2022 he won the I International Competition for Intervention in Heritage of the Northwest (Region of Murcia); in 2023 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Mexican Institute of Victimology and received the “Brush of the Year” prize at the Fuente Álamo Biennial; and in 2024 he founded FUNDAC, the Foundation for the Promotion of Art and Culture Lidó Rico. In 2025 he was selected to create the commemorative work for the 1200th anniversary of the city of Murcia, a project that reinforces his bond with his homeland and his commitment to collective memory. Lidó Rico’s work has always been built upon a profound investigation of the body as a vehicle of expression and as a space of memory. Through the direct casting of his own body, he has developed sculptures of great expressive power, transmitting the fragility and intensity of human experience. From his earliest pieces in the late 1980s to his most recent projects, he has maintained a steady production that has traveled across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, with a strong presence in major institutions and both public and private collections. His career, marked by international awards and projects of great relevance in public spaces, positions him as one of the Spanish artists with the greatest international projection of his generation.
