Lai Junjie (born in Huizhou, China, in 1991) is one of the most internationally active young sculptors in contemporary China. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sculpture from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University in 2015, and graduated with the maximum grade (110/110 with honors) from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze (Florence Academy of Fine Arts) in Italy in 2019, earning a Master of Arts degree in Visual Arts. He currently teaches at Hebei Normal University.

With over 15 years of artistic practice, LAI Junjie has built a creative trajectory spanning Asia and Europe. His works have been exhibited in numerous shows and collected by public institutions in China, Italy, Albania, and other countries. He has won many awards, including the Golden Tulip Award from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, the Silver Award at the “Blasting” Exhibition of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, a nomination for the Master Award at Miami Art Week (USA), the 5th Italian STREGARTI National Contemporary Art Award – Sculpture Category, and the Best New Artist Award at the Durrës International Contemporary Art Biennale (Albania). He has held solo exhibitions at the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in Beijing, the Du Du Art Gallery at Jinbaohui (Beijing), the Shijiazhuang Art Museum, Galleria VIA DEI FOSSI (Italy), the Church of San Domenico in Città di Castello (Italy), and the Shangri-La Alpine Art Museum. In recent years, his works have been featured in numerous important national and international exhibitions, such as the 20th PARATISSIMA Art Festival (Italy), the 35th Padova Art Fair (Italy), the ART IN NUVOLE Art Fair in Rome (Italy), the 14th National Art Exhibition of China organized by the China Artists Association, the 2023 Linyi National Sculpture Exhibition, the 3rd “Tianxing Yidong” Dynamic Sculpture Exhibition 2025 organized by the China Sculpture Institute, the 2025 “On Taihang Mountain” National Sculpture Invitational Exhibition, the China Artists Association Art Committee Youth Exhibition Series: The First National Youth Sculpture Exhibition, as well as the Rome International Art Biennale, the Caserta International Contemporary Art Biennale (Italy), the Durrës International Contemporary Art Biennale (Albania), the Milan International Art Biennale, the 2023 Pakistan International Contemporary Art Grand Exhibition, the 5th Italian STREGARTI National Contemporary Art Exhibition, and the 2025 Art Shopping Contemporary Art Fair at the Louvre in Paris.Benefiting from his dual academic background – from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze – LAI Junjie’s artistic creation combines Eastern and Western cultural perspectives with profound reflection, focusing on common human issues in the era of globalization and information. Through series such as Information Cocoon and Island Dwellers, he materializes the information isolation, cognitive limitations, and spiritual loneliness that affect individuals worldwide under the dominance of algorithms, reflecting a borderless era predicament through wrapped or distant sculptural forms. With the “Duck Series”, he integrates classic Eastern and Western images with unified symbols, ironyizing the cultural homogenization that accompanies globalization (a phenomenon that weakens unique identities) and inspiring international reflections on the protection of cultural diversity. Meanwhile, he fuses traditional sculptural techniques with modern materials and technologies, exploring the global common proposition of innovative coexistence between traditional and contemporary art, making his works an era mirror and spiritual resonance that transcends geographical boundaries.
