On Easter Sunday morning in 1964, when I was 15 years old, I woke up with the sudden idea of making a drawing.
I shoved my pillow into my back, grabbed the block and pen and started drawing. My first serious artistic drawing was born. I suddenly decided to become an artist.
From then on I only wanted to produce art, first in the form of drawings. When I began to become artistically mature at the beginning of the 1970s in Basel by studying art at the university, I was particularly fascinated by the old bookstores with their antiquarian collections. A tremendous wealth of inspiration. The picture books with representations from psychiatry around the time of the First World War that I came across made a lasting impression on me.
Disastrous methods produced great suffering in the oppressed patients. The illustrations showed this suffering only indirectly. But they were still explosive enough and full of ambivalent and alienating, touching symbolism.
They became the material and models for my first drawings and oil paintings. As a second social fringe group, I came across the freaks immediately afterwards. This theme, too, as a mysterious whim of nature, seemed to me to be artistically productive. I made several
drawings for it. Perhaps these pictures appealed to me because of my relevant experiences in the boarding school. At that time I had no idea that some pictures would only come true in the future.
After the first years of apprenticeship I brought order into the topics of my artistic practice. What do I deal with? Which artistic path do I follow, which tracks do I still want to lay? I built up an artistic rail network of areas and concepts. The encyclopedia of my artistic work: basic phenomena of humanity.
My production was not limited to what was visible from the outside and the medium of drawing, but also showed what can be seen with the inner eye. I began to invent invisible things, to develop my own language of forms and signs, to depict
the unrealities of other levels and spheres; as diverse and versatile as possible. Disillusioned by a chain of unpleasant experiences, in the new millennium I “plunged” thematically/artistically for a few years (project MEERKUNST) and then began to work figuratively again. The technique of drawing became more and more intensively important and applied.
In the years 2009 to 2018 I created almost exclusively pencil drawings.
