Maurizio Savini

Born in Rome, 1962. He studied architecture at La Sapienza University of Rome, where he lives and works. In 1989 he attended the atelier of Gianni Dessì and in 1992 he held his first solo exhibition in Düsseldorf. Later he participated in numerous group exhibitions, exposing abroad – in London, Paris, Taipei, Havana, Lyon and Edinburgh – and in Italy, becoming well known thanks to the sculptures of chewing gum, which brought about through a long process that starts with a cast of coated plaster of polyurethane foam, and comes to the final stage of drying obtained with three different fixatives: the antibiotic, formaldehyde, Paraloid. In 2002 for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino he realizes the scenography of the ballet La n du jour of Schubert, choreographed by Fabrizio Monteverde, represented in Florence and Bologna. The following year plans two solo exhibitions in Rome: Low Fidelity for Volume! and Tabula Casa, the Museum of Contemporary Art. In these years he took part in numerous solo and group exhibitions and national and international projects, including Art for Children of Beslan pediatric hospital in Vladikavkaz (2005). In 2008 a solo exhibition, Requiem for Dissent, at Testori UK (London), and Micronarrativa exhibition in the Contemporary Art Museum of Saint Etienne (France). In 2014 another important exhibition in Lyon, Vrai Nord, Olivier Houg Gallery. Among the most recent solo exhibitions we must mention: The Song of the Earth, produced by Icarius of Montepulciano (2010), and Power of delusion, by Giulia Abate, in the monumental complex of the Vittoriano in Rome (2013). In April 2010 he created in Rome in the Press Room of Palazzo Valentini an installation inaugurated by Nicola Zingaretti, President of the Rome Province. In 2016 he has illustrated the manifesto of the 59th edition of the Festival of two worlds and inaugurates the exhibition Is the world ying? (Il mondo vola?), curated by Duccio Trombadori and organized by the Mucciaccia Gallery of Rome in the Town Hall of Spoleto. In September 2016 inagurates the exhibition Forbidden World, curated by Gianluca Marziani, at Partners & Mucciaccia Gallery in Singapore.

... more

In the modern world, economics and politics are dominated by dichotomies, fractures and obvious contrasts, which are broken down into a long series of binary categories: wealth and poverty, power and powerlessness, male and female genders, profits and ethics, legality and illegality, war and peace, human consumption and environmental damage. In fact this is the disaster that hangs over us, in the no longer distant future; despite the collective efforts to remove this perspective, despite all the strategies developed to reassure us and cheer us, in the meantime this belief has been consolidated in the minds of most people, and it is a grim background of the meaning of life for the young generation of the developed countries where people work more, earn more, spend more and take on more and more debts. On the one hand, the practice of cultivating this feeling has something repulsive, as it all too easily ends up in resignation and apathy, or even, even worse, spuring the masses to a hectic hedonism and artists and intellectuals to a morbid cynicism resigned to what appears to be inevitable, and that wants to sip the very last drops from the chalice of the world before dashing it to pieces. On the other hand, however, this danger cannot justify this perception and, therefore, the undaunted, mad suicidal dash toward the abyss. This applies to each one of us. In the “century of the environment” ecological-social economy will require a new type of science: in order to provide an answer to the pressing questions of technical civilization, it will be necessary to overcome on the one hand, the barriers that separate the individual disciplines, and on the other those barriers separating theory from praxis. Today’s universal civilization is comparable to the most complex picture that has ever been painted, in the long run, will the the bearing structure of the picture frame, the subjectivity that wants to seize world domination will ruin the picture of the supporting structure without destroying its marvelous complexity? This is the task which stands before us today; whatever it may be, one thing we can say: we have accepted an intellectual, moral and political challenge, that we are perhaps not up to, but which, at least, does not give us the feeling of uselessness.

On the one hand, the practice of cultivating this feeling has something repulsive, as it all too easily ends up in resignation and apathy, or even, even worse, spurring the masses to a hectic hedonism and artists and intellectuals to a morbid cynicism resigned to what appears to be inevitable, and that wants to sip the very last drops from the chalice of the world before dashing it to pieces.
