“In my work, I try to capture these essences never touched by a word”

Isabel forges between paintings and sculptures using soot, acrylic, smoke to create a phenomenal, clear to the eye, seldom visible and impossible to touch, she speaks of the intangible, what appears to be, but seldom visible, almost impossible to touch, much less entrap.

After many years working with smoke, painting with soot which has already left this subtle, glaze impression, making it incorporeal, from off-white greys to the deepest blacks, thereby insinuating a hereafter, she has attempted to enclose the ethereal.

Isabel has trapped clouds, kept power and enclosed genius in perspex boxes. These pieces are transparent sheets, painted and suspended inside acrylic boxes, by superposing these acetates, they create three-dimensional images.

‘Geniuses’ is the natural evolution of her work, ‘Smoke’. This evolution, while maintaining the germinating essence of ‘Smoke’, shifts from painting to sculpture.

The intangible is indicated and presented enclosed, however not statically, as the forms displayed by Isabel have their own life and change according to the light and the perspective from which they are viewed. Just as clouds enclose the silent movement caused only by light.

Geniuses are fantastic creatures of Mesopotamian and Arabic mythology, invisible beings that take different forms and are associated with the divine realm. Isabel is inspired by geniuses, those who, according to mythology, are born from smoke, and in many tales, appear trapped, willing to escape and offer their powers. Despite being static objects, they summon the spectator in an inevitable process of search, movement, and discovery.

Isabel’s work can be found in private collections across Europe and the United States. She has participated in art fairs in Miami, New York, Basel, Zurich, Cologne, Berlin. In February 2018 she participated in three art fairs in both group and solo presentations in Art Madrid, Just Mad and  Flescha. Solo exhibitions include The Wound-flower Series in Madrid from 2002 to 2004; her early series of Smoke in Madrid and Berlin in 2008 and from 2012 to 2013, The Bear’s Fur in Madrid in 2015 and Genius in Madrid in 2016. Isabel is one of the founders of URGEL3, an alternative collective art center, supporting and promoting artists based in Madrid.
